Linux Information
Linux is a Unix style operating system. It is not officially Unix, however its interfaces and mode of operation perform as standard Unix.
Linux is written by a group of developers, headed by Linus Torvalds, who started writing Linux in 1991.
Many companies, including IBM and other large companies, sponsor development of Linux, and thousands of other developers contribute their time freely. Linux is licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License.
This license is commonly referred to as an "Open Source" style licence, and allows making of copies and redistibution.
Distributions
Linux is very different from Windows. It is not provided as an operating system on its own, but instead is offered as a "distribution".
A distribution includes the core Linux Operating System, and a series of packages chosen by the distributor to optimise Linux as they see fit.
Special Linux distributions exist, for example, to run just from CD, and also to run on systems with restricted memory.

Applications
There are many Linux applications, from the trivial to the heavyweight.
The huge advantage of Linux is that many of applications are available free, and in addition the source code is available.
Normally charges are made for support, not the application itself.

Games
Linux is not only for serious servers; you can play games on Linux too. For example, Doom and Quake were originally written to run on Unix (and hence Linux) systems.
